Framewave’s maps are drawn, not photographed. Every country outline, coastline and location marker comes from open geographic datasets bundled into the app, which is why map templates render identically every time and work with no network connection. Those datasets are credited below.

Location search

City and town coordinates come from GeoNames, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. We ship a filtered extract: places above about five thousand people, plus every national and regional capital regardless of size.

It covers cities, towns and countries. It is not a full geocoder — there are no landmarks, street addresses or postcodes in it. Where a search finds nothing, pick the nearest town and move the marker, or enter coordinates directly.

Country outlines

Coastlines and borders come from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain, by way of the world-atlas package. Projections are computed with d3-geo.

What our maps do not include

There is no satellite imagery, terrain shading, street detail or place labelling in the underlying data, so no map style can produce them. Commercial map tiles could, but every major provider’s terms forbid rendering their tiles into an exported video file, so we do not use them.

Where you need a satellite or street backdrop, travel-route templates accept a map screenshot you supply yourself and animate over it. Whatever you upload stays subject to the terms of wherever you got it — those are between you and that provider, and worth checking before you publish.
